Frequently asked questions

What people ask most often.

Your question not here? Bottom right there is a chat where you can ask it. If it is about an order, a person reads along.

Making a story

How long does it take?

Filling in takes five to ten minutes. You see the first drawn character after three screens. The full story is written after payment and is usually ready within an hour; you get an email as soon as it is.

How is this different from a book where only the name changes?

In a book like that the story is fixed: your child gets the name and sometimes the looks, and the rest is the same for every child. At MiraTells the story itself is written for you — around the people in it, what makes your child happy and the memories you share. Two children with the same name do not get the same book. And nothing goes to the printer before you have read and approved it.

Do I have to create an account?

Not to begin. Only at checkout do we ask your name and email address, and an account is then made automatically. You sign in with a link in your email — there is no password to think up.

How many characters can be in it?

Five in total, including the main character. That is not a technical limit but a storytelling one: more people means nobody has a part that matters any more.

Can a pet take part?

Yes, with a name and with a photo. Pets are often the best supporting role — they may do things children may not.

Which languages can the story be in?

Dutch, German, French and English. Other languages are on the way; we only switch them on once they are good enough to have a book printed from.

What age is it for?

The stories are written for children of about three to eight. You give the age and Mira matches the length, the words and the kind of adventure to it. For a special occasion the story can be about a grown-up instead.

Can I make a second story with the same characters?

Yes. Everyone you added before is waiting in your account — same name, same face, same dog. You tick them and start at the story instead of at the photographs.

Can I use well-known characters from a film or a book?

No. Elsa, Spider-Man and Pikachu belong to someone else, and we are not allowed to draw them — not even if you describe them yourself. A dragon of your own, a superhero of your own or a spaceship of your own is fine, and usually makes for a more personal book.

Ordering and delivery

When do I pay?

Only after you have read and accepted Mira’s proposal. Until then it costs nothing.

How can I pay?

With iDEAL and Wero, Bancontact, Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, American Express, Cartes Bancaires, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna, Riverty or an ordinary bank transfer. Checkout runs through Mollie; your card details never reach us.

How long does delivery take?

For a printed book a few working days after your approval in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France. To the rest of Europe transport takes 4 to 11 working days, plus the time to print. Digital versions are ready at once.

Can it be delivered faster?

Every order already goes to the printer as a rush job and leaves as one. That is our standard and costs nothing extra — so there is no dearer option that makes it faster still.

What does shipping cost?

To the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France € 4.95 per order. To the rest of Europe € 12.50, to the United Kingdom and Luxembourg € 21.75, and to Norway and Switzerland € 32.00. Always per order and not per book: up to five stories travel in one parcel. An eBook or audiobook costs nothing to deliver.

Which countries do you ship to?

All of Europe, including the United Kingdom, Norway and Switzerland. The eBook and the audiobook can reach you anywhere in the world — they are in your account as soon as they are ready.

Can I have it sent to another address?

Yes. At checkout you fill in the delivery address separately, so you can have it sent straight to the birthday child.

Do you sell gift vouchers?

No, but you can give the story itself. You make it, put a dedication in it saying who it is from, and have it sent straight to the person it is for — with wrapping paper or in a gift box if you like.

Can I order something extra later?

Yes, from your account. The story has already been written by then, so a reorder is cheaper than the first time.

Can I still change or cancel my order?

Until you approve it, everything can still change: the text, the drawings and the address. Only then does it go to the printer. If something turns out to be wrong after that, write to us at once — as long as the book has not been printed we can usually stop it.

Where do I find my invoice?

As a PDF with the confirmation e-mail of your order, with VAT and address on it. Lost it? Send us the order number and you will have it again.

If something is not right

What if I do not like the story?

Before payment you can let Mira think of something else, as often as you like. After payment you read the full story and can ask for a change per scene — shorter, funnier, more about Grandpa. Only when you approve is it printed.

A name is misspelt.

You can change that yourself as long as the story has not been approved yet. If the book has already been printed, email [email protected] — we will sort it out.

A drawing is not right. Can it be done again?

Yes, before you approve. You read the whole story in your account and can say per scene what should be different: shorter, funnier, more about grandad, or the drawing once more. Nothing is printed until you approve.

The book arrived damaged.

Let us know with a photo and we send a new copy. You need not send anything back for that.

Can I get my money back?

Because the story is made specially for you, the right of withdrawal lapses as soon as Mira begins — you tick that deliberately at checkout. If something is wrong with the print or the delivery, we of course put that right.

About how it is made

Is this made with AI?

Yes. Mira is our digital storyteller: you provide the people, the moments and the direction, and with the help of artificial intelligence a story and the illustrations are made from that. Mira is not a person and does not pretend to be.

Do the drawings really look like us?

If you upload photos, yes. Mira first makes one drawing per character that you approve, and then uses it in every scene — so the same child stays the same child throughout the book. A drawing is a drawing; it is not an edited photo.

Whose is the story?

Yours. You may read it, share it, print it and give it away. We do not use your story as advertising unless you give separate permission for that.

Is my child’s photo used to train AI?

No. What we send through our suppliers’ APIs is not used there to train models. The safety and privacy page says exactly who processes what and how long it is kept.

Could something come out that is not for children?

Mira writes for a child and stays there: no violence, no frightening images, no grown-up themes. More to the point, nothing goes to the printer before you have read the story and approved it, and until then you can ask for a change per scene.

How long do you keep my story and the photographs?

The story and the characters stay as long as your account does — that is how you make a second book with them later. The photograph you upload is deleted after ninety days: once the character has been drawn we no longer need it. Want everything gone? Write to [email protected]; only the invoice details have to be kept for seven years.

How do I log in without a password?

You enter your e-mail address and get a link in your inbox; that link logs you in. So there is no password to forget, and nothing of yours to leak at our end.

The book and the other forms

How big is the book and how many pages does it have?

The hardcover is square, 21 by 21 centimetres, with a solid cover. The number of pages follows the story and is usually around thirty: fourteen scenes, each with a drawing and a page of text.

What file do I get the eBook as?

As a PDF, with the same drawings and the same text as the printed book. You read it on any screen and can print it yourself.

What is the audiobook, and can I add it later?

The whole story read aloud, as an MP3 you can play or download in your account. You order it along for € 4.95, or add it later to a story that is already finished — the story itself does not have to be made again.

Can I order gift wrapping with it?

Yes. At checkout you can choose wrapping paper or a gift box, and a jigsaw of one of the drawings from the book. It all travels in the same parcel, so you pay shipping once.

Can I put a dedication at the front of the book?

Yes, on the title page: who the book is from and a few lines with it. You see how that page will look while you fill it in. Skipping it is fine too — a book without a dedication is a whole book.
