Animals

The pet is usually the best character.

Animals do in a story what children themselves are not allowed to: they run off, they dare, they say what they think. Mira puts the real animal in — with the name it has at home and the habits only you know.

Personal. Really personal.

What makes an animal your animal

Not the breed, but the behaviour. A dog that always lies down in exactly the same spot is more recognisable than ten sentences about its coat.

  • the name, and the nickname that is actually used more often
  • where the animal likes to lie best
  • what it does when someone rings the bell
  • the habit the family laughs about
  • what it is nót allowed to do and keeps doing anyway
  • a photo, so it really looks like them

“She turned straight back to the first page to find her gran again.”

Sometimes all you need is a small idea

Three directions Mira can take

  • The day the dog was in charge

For one whole day Storm decides what happens. It rains, there is no breakfast, and it becomes the best day of the year.

  • Who is miaowing in the shed?

A sound that is there in the evening and not in the morning. The cat knows more than it lets on.

  • The animal hospital in the hallway

When everyone in the house has been a patient once, there turns out to be one patient who really needs help.

You need not choose. “Let Mira choose” is there too, and your own idea is always welcome.

From your world

What you tell, and what comes out

  • Noor, 5
  • cat Mouse
  • wants to be a vet
  • little brother Sem

Mira’s proposal

Noor, Mouse and the night of the injured bird

Mouse brings in a bird that is still alive. Noor makes a box, Sem holds the lamp, and together they wait until it gets light.

An example of what such a proposal looks like. Yours will be about you.

Your story. In the format that suits you.

Works from age 2

Animals are the safest way into a story: even a toddler recognises their own dog in a drawing. For older children the animal can be the very character that ties the knot.

Questions people often ask

Can our pet have the leading role?

Yes. The main character need not be a person. We do recommend putting the child in too — the book is for them, and being in it together works better than only watching.

Does the drawing look like our animal?

If you upload a photo, yes. Mira first makes a drawing of the animal that you approve, and then uses it in every scene — so it does not change colour halfway through the book.

Our animal is no longer with us. Is it still possible?

It is, and it happens more often than you would think. Tell Mira in the field for personal details; she then writes a story in which it is simply there, without making a farewell of it. Unless that is precisely what you want.

Who deserves a story of their own?
