Grandma and Grandad
The story that belongs on Grandma’s lap.
What children remember of their grandparents are the small things: the biscuit tin, the shed, the song at bedtime. Mira makes a story in which those things are right — to read aloud at Grandma and Grandad’s, or to be given by them.
Personal. Really personal.
What of Grandma and Grandad can go in the story
The more specific, the more it is theirs. A habit says more than a description.
- what they are called — Grandma, Nana, Grandad, Pops or something of your own
- the house, the garden or the caravan where it always happens
- what they do with your child that nobody else does
- a word or a joke that only belongs to them
- the pet that lives at Grandma and Grandad’s
- a message from the grandparents themselves, on the first page
“She turned straight back to the first page to find her gran again.”

Sometimes all you need is a small idea
Three directions Mira can take
The key to the shed
For years Grandad has said there is nothing in the shed. Today the key is suddenly lying on the table.
The recipe that was not right
One ingredient is missing, and according to Grandma it is somewhere on the other side of the garden.
The first night staying over
Without Mum and Dad, in a house that sounds different at night than home does.
You need not choose. “Let Mira choose” is there too, and your own idea is always welcome.
From your world
What you tell, and what comes out
- Noor, 5
- Grandad Ger and Granny Riet

Mira’s proposal
Noor and Grandad’s pumpkin
In Grandad Ger’s vegetable patch grows a pumpkin that gets a little bigger every night. Noor and Granny Riet have to find out why — before it no longer fits through the gate.
An example of what such a proposal looks like. Yours will be about you.

When the grandparents give it
Grandparents can make the story themselves, as a present. If they use a photo of their grandchild, they ask the parents first — it is their child, and the law asks for that too.
Questions people often ask
Can grandparents make the book themselves as a gift?
Yes. Whoever makes the story does not have to be in it. You can have it sent to another address, and just before checkout you write a message for the first page.
Can Grandad be in it when he is no longer with us?
He can. Write down how you would like him to be remembered; Mira does not turn it into a goodbye story unless you ask for one. You read the story first and decide whether it is right.
Can all the grandparents be in it?
Up to five characters in total, your grandchild included. With four grandparents the story is full; it often works better to pick one side and give the other a story of its own.
